Dumfries & Galloway Life People of the Year Awards – 2011 testimonials

"What this wonderful event has done is highlight not just the number of great people we have, but the whole breadth and depth of everything they do and everything they represent."

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Alex Fergusson was so impressed with the Dumfries & Galloway Life People of the Year Awards that he called on the Scottish Parliament to congratulate the magazine and all the winners who were announced at the celebration lunch at Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries, in December last year.

He tabled the motion that: “the Parliament congratulates Dumfries & Galloway Life magazine on organising the People of the Year 2011 Awards; considers it important to recognise the outstanding achievements and efforts shown by all nominees in the Community, Enterprise, Arts & Leisure and Food & Drink categories; wishes all those involved continued success in what it considers their excellent work and congratulates the individual category winners; especially congratulates Jennefer Tobin on winning both the Volunteer of the Year and the Dumfries & Galloway Person of the Year awards, and understands that these awards are in recognition of what it considers to be the selfless and outstanding work that she has given to the establishment and running of the charity, Southwest Scotland RnR, an organisation that offers a week’s organised rest and recreation for armed forces personnel returning from frontline duties to facilitate their return to non-active duties.”

The motion was supported by John Lamont, Murdo Fraser, Jim Hume, Nanette Milne, Liz Smith, Paul Wheelhouse, Jamie McGrigor, Jackie Baillie, Kenneth Gibson, Annabelle Ewing, Aileen McLeod, Joan McAlpine, Hugh Henry, Bill Kidd, and Margaret Burgess.

During an interview for our video of the awards, Alex said: "What this wonderful event has done is highlight not just the number of great people we have, but the whole breadth and depth of everything they do and everything they represent.

“It was a fantastic occasion. The climax - when Jennefer Tobin, who has established this fantastic charity in the area with so much help from so many volunteers from round about [was named overall winner] - just sums up everything that is best about Dumfries & Galloway. She's a selfless individual, one who lives to give hope and pleasure to others and she totally deserves the award.

“She is just part of what is great about this region and I really do congratulate Dumfries & Galloway Life for bringing this together; it is a real positive for the region and is just as it should be."

Other thank you's and congratulations

"Elizabeth and I would like to thank you and the magazine staff for the privilege of attending the awards luncheon. It was a superb event and we were very honoured to be part of it. What a wealth of talent we have in the region and what a superb magazine. I feel part of your extended magazine family. I really enjoyed taking part as a judge and the day was truly memorable. Thanks for all your hard work in ensuring the continued success of this event."

Jeff Brown, Co-ordinator, Enterprise - Curriculum for Excellence, Judge

"On behalf of the Mull of Galloway Experience and on a personal note may I express our sincere thanks for the excellent awards ceremony. Considering the amount of pressure you are all under with deadlines etc it never ceases to amaze me how you have time not only to organise but run such a prestigious event.

"Gilly Fraser is one of the best MCs I have heard for a very long time; she is a natural at it, and may I suggest you book her for next year.

"Without doubt the magazine grows from strength to strength, and your winning of the Scottish Consumer Magazine of the Year award pays testament to that.

"It was a splendid day; the meal was superb, company excellent and all the recipients of the awards well-deserving."

Steve Hardy, Mull of Galloway Experience

"Just to say what an excellent awards do it was - and well done to everyone who won, particularly David Bogie, who I know very well, and also Jennefer Tobin, who my late mother supported heavily right up until she died."

Mark Jardine, Rocan Loch, sponsor of the Sports Team of the Year award

"Thank you for a wonderful afternoon on Friday. It was a hugely enjoyable event which really captured the best of what Dumfries & Galloway has to offer. We were both delighted and honoured to attend on behalf of DG One.

"Everyone nominated had an inspirational story and it is great that they have received the recognition they very much deserve."

Ashley Smith, depute manager, DG One, sponsor of the Sports Person of the Year award

"Thank you so very much for inviting Ben Jaekel, myself and my husband to your awards ceremony. We all had a fantastic day and although Ben was not a winner in his category, that did nothing to stop him being absolutely thrilled to be nominated and delighted to be there, as were we: his very proud parents.

"We met some lovely people on the day and thoroughly enjoyed the meal, the presentations, Gillian Fraser's input and the whole experience.

"Very well done to you and all your team who made the day possible; it was a wonderful experience which Ben will never forget.

"Thanks also to the judges for considering him for their shortlist and for their time and effort - what a tough job they must have had deliberating over all the wonderful nominations."

Sandra Jaekel, mum of Ben Jaekel, Sports Person of the Year finalist

"Just wanted to say a very BIG THANK YOU for inviting me to the D&G Life Awards Lunch on Friday past. I had a wonderful day; the company on my table were lovely the food, service and venue were first class! A massive round of applause to all who work for D&G Life, you have all put so much work and commitment into making the magazine such a success and deserve all the credit you get. The atmosphere in the room was wonderful I even shed a tear or two, it is wonderful to see such fantastic, caring and talented people be awarded for the work they do, each and every one of them deserved recognition. Thank you for all the support the magazine gave Aston this year, we are all very grateful."

Elaine Carruthers, Sales Manager, Aston Hotel Dumfries

We were made to feel really welcome and it was a very enjoyable experience; a lovely day altogether. This was the first time that we had sponsored an award and it was an absolute privilege to be able to present the Volunteer of the Year award to Jennefer. She’s an exceptional lady; what she does for injured soldiers, is quite phenomenal and inspiring. The awards ceremony was a very enjoyable experience; a lovely day altogether.

Lennie Morris, Good Man Home Improvements Ltd, Volunteer of the Year Sponsor

"We were very surprised and delighted to have been nominated for an award, and also to be invited to the luncheon last week at Easterbrook Hall. We just wanted to thank you all for a lovely afternoon, and if you could please on our thanks to the appropriate people concerned."

Alan and Helen Brown, From Ewe to You, Food & Drink Producer Finalists

"The lunch on Friday was magnifique. Everything about it was 100% and to think it is only the 2nd one the magazine has run for the awards. Gilly was so composed with not a foot wrong (shoes were amazing!) and mentioning a little bit about all the nominees was perfect. A huge congratulations, I could go on all day about it."

Mavis Paterson, Judge
